Which ICP-OES Optical Technology Offers Superior Performance: Echelle or ORCA?

Description

The heart of any ICP-OES spectrometer is the optical system. So it’s important that scientists, laboratory managers, and other users understand some salient facts about a very critical component of these complex instruments. This knowledge will help users choose the most appropriate spectrometer for each type of analysis required in their work.

Today’s modern ICP-OES models take one of two approaches to optical design: echelle-based or Rowland Circle-based (Optimized Rowland Circle Alignment, or ORCA) technologies.

This presentation discusses key advantages and disadvantages of each technology based on the analytical objective of achieving either highest precision, maximum sensitivity, or both. The presentation explains the fundamental differences of each technology and how the optics of echelle and ORCA are matched to the detectors. It also discusses fundamental concepts such as light loss, stray light, spectral orders and how each can potentially affect the outcome of an analysis.

Examples of specific applications and analytical results are presented to demonstrate these concepts. It is a very deep dive into the science of spectrometer optics. For those who use these powerful instruments it should be very informative.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the fundamental differences between the leading optical technologies used in ICP-OES spectrometers
  • Get inside each optical system and learn the basic development concepts
  • Review some of the relevant principles of optical science and how they can impact your analyses
  • Review and discuss real world applications and results
