Fully Automated Elemental Analyses of Additives and Wear Metals in Oil Using ACAROS-ARCOS ICP-OES

Description

Lubricating oil formulation plays an important role in making machinery last longer, run cleaner, or perform better under severe conditions. The amount and type of organometallic compounds, also known as additives, must be controlled and depletion avoided.

In addition, wear of metals in lubricating oils during use can indicate wear of all oil-wetted components and when wear is critical.

For this reason, additives and wear metals in lubricating oils are extensively analyzed, with service laboratories analyzing up to thousands of samples per day.

Due to its multi-element capability, high linear dynamic range, excellent stability, and low detection limits, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is the accepted method for elemental analysis of oil and is described in several methods such as ASTM D4951 or ASTM D5185.

While the analysis process has been largely automated for some time, sample preparation and dilution with an appropriate solvent by volume or weight still involved manual labor.

With the ACAROS-ARCOS ICP-OES, a fully automated, all-in-one solution is now available. The system allows unattended preparation of samples by volume and weight, including analysis without operator intervention. The quality of analytical results is improved, laboratory productivity is increased, errors are eliminated and the cost per analysis is reduced.

This webcast will introduce the ACAROS-ARCOS ICP-OES and its benefits..
