Analysis of Higher TDS Waters

Application Brief

Analysis of Higher TDS Waters by ICP-OES

The analysis of waters is one of the main ICP-OES applications. At the same time, the water matrix is not necessarily always clean but may contain higher amounts of totally dissolved solids (TDS). Examples are the analysis of run-off water, formation water, brackish and seawater. These types often contain TDS between 1-20 % and the elemental analysis may be required for process control or environmental aspects.

This report describes the principal methodology for the analysis of higher TDS waters by ICP-OES. It presents typical detection limits for a wide range of elements as well as studies on accuracy and stability. The measurements in this report refer to the analysis of seawater, whose average salinity is 3.5%, but are generally true for comparable applications.
