Tungsten Analysis

Application Brief

Trace Analysis in Line-Rich Tungsten Matrix Using High Resolution ICP-OES

Widely known for its use as filaments in light bulbs, tungsten is utilized for a wide range of applications due to its physical and chemical properties such as the high melting point, good electrical conductivity and low thermal expansion coefficient.

The reduction of contaminants during the production and recycling is required as traces of undesired elements can impair the material properties such as grain growth, thus influencing product properties. Therefore, robust and precise analysis is necessary in primary production, recycling and manufacturing of tungsten materials to assure the best product qualities.

Like other transition metals such as Ti or Zr, W has a high density of spectral emission lines which requires the best possible analytical performance: High resolution to separate matrix and analyte lines, a wide wavelength range to be able to choose interference free lines and detectors free from blooming, are essential for the best analytical results using ICP-OES.
