Historically, cobalt has been used as a blue pigment for porcelain and ceramics, and to produce glass of a distinctive blue color. In modern times it became an important component of alloys with high temperature stability as well as corrosion resistance, which are used e.g. in aircraft turbines and jet engines.
With the advance of portable electronic devices and an increased demand for electronic vehicles, cobalt also became an important compound in lithium ion batteries. With its high sensitivity and matrix compatibility ICP-OES can be used perfectly to verify the purity of cobalt material and its usability for the various applications.
This application note reveals the limits of detection in high-purity cobalt using axial plasma observation.
