Manganese is an important component in stainless steel and other alloys, providing important attributes like hardness or corrosion resistance. Manganese oxides exist in a high variety of oxidation states and are often used as oxidizing agents. Manganese (IV) oxide is also a common component in standard alkaline batteries.
In recent years, manganese has become an important constituent of cathode materials for lithiumion batteries, like lithium manganese oxide (LMO) or lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC). Manganese is obtained by mining of manganese ores, with the main global resources located in South Africa, Gabon, Australia, and China.
In this report, the analysis of manganese ores using the SPECTROGREEN ICP-OES with dual side-on plasma observation was investigated. The report includes sample preparation, line selection, limits of detection for the trace elements and studies on precision and accuracy. Excellent results were obtained for the analysis of certified reference materials.
